RespSafety helps companies requiring employees to wear respirators to get OSHA-compliant in two simple steps. Most other options involve clunky online questionnaires and booking an in-person respirator fit test, but RespSafety makes all of that simple with an intuitive, user-friendly questionnaire and a DIY fit test program.

RespSafety exploded in popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic, with more and more companies requiring their employees to wear respirators as part of everyday work. As the company grew, features were tacked on to meet user needs, resulting in a great feature stack, but the entire system needed to be simplified into one cohesive unit to be user-friendly and solidify its position as an agile, user-centric player in the market. Additionally, a design system was envisioned in order to standardize feature additions into the future.

Usability testing
Iteration and handoff for development
The client opted to skip the early research phase due to time and budget constraints. In stead, usability testing would be done across multiple variants of each user flow (recommendation forms, sign up, checkout, questionnaire completion, employee management) to better understand what needed improvement and to eliminate the risk of uncertainty due to earlier assumptions.
The Challenge
There are specific needs based on the size and geographical configuration of client organizations. For example, when a fit test is needed, RespSafety offers a fit test starter kit that can be reused multiple times during each round of 1-7 employees being tested. For multi-site organizations, this means one of these starter kits may be kept at each site. Secondly, an individual kit is needed for each employee as it is single-use. Communicating these recommendations requires a complex form to understand the client organization’s needs and then present a recommended set of test kits.

Solutions
Usability testing helped us to clarify down our nomenclature for test kits, streamline the process of kit recommendation and value communication. The process resulted in a cleaner, simpler platform that was more inclusive according to web content accessibility guidelines. Gone was the jargon-heavy, clunky interface, and left in its place was a more approachable platform built for a wider audience.
Development of both the web app and marketing site was complete and launched in July 2023 and we look forward to feedback from users.

Feedback is key
By staying close to the development team during the design process and throughout development, we were able to pivot to make adjustments and compromises that would be more efficient in the development of the project. Working this closely forged a great deal of trust between design and development.
